Job/Position Description

The proposals are invited in the field of Chemical Ecology to understand the mechanistic basis of rich biodiversity of the North East Region. These may include chemical studies on predator-prey, parasite host, herbivore-plant, virus-vector, inter- and interspecific interactions in the NE ecosystems. The proposals should focus on studying structure of small molecules and their dynamic role in ecology, while addressing new fundamental and applied biological questions. The proposals should deploy advanced investigations to help understand the following questions:

  • How organisms communicate through chemical interactions (both short and long-distance interactions) to shape the unique biosphere of the North East Region, e.g. studying pheromones and semiochemicals?
  • How global climatic change and anthropogenic pressures are affecting the fragile ecological settings of the North East Region?
  • By studying the molecules so discovered in microbes, fungi, plants, and animals of NER, the proposals should strive to mimic nature’s flavors and fragrances, medicines, and toxins, and learn how to put them to use for a healthier life and cleaner environment such as managing agricultural pests and mitigating vector transmission of human, domestic animal, and wildlife diseases; developing nutraceutical and pharmaceuticals for betterment of humans etc.
  • Establishing a critical mass of trained manpower in the field of Chemical Ecology in the NE region.

Norms for Assistance: The proposals should be NER centric with multi-institutional participation from institutions within NER or with outside NER Institutions. If the projects are with outside NER institutions then the budget sharing should be in the ratio of up to 60:40 between NER and outside NER institutions, respectively.

Essential Qualifications

Desirable Experience

  • 2-5 years experience and evidence of documentation skills or research report writing skills
  • Experience of Review of Literature, Primary data collection, data processing, sampling design and Questionnaire design
  • Experience in research preferably in WASH, Community Development
  • Preferably having some admin. and supervisory experience
  • Experience of data analysis in excel and any Statistical software

Job description: Computational modeling of 3D structures of large macromolecular assemblies

Structures of protein complexes contribute to our understanding of mechanistic details of biological processes and the roles of these molecular machines in disease. However, structures of large protein assemblies are difficult to obtain using any single experimental method. We use computational modeling to determine such structures by combining a variety of experimental data, physical theories, and statistical inference.

On the method development front, we are interested in developing methods to improve model representation and validate the models. On the applications front, we are applying these modeling methods to characterize assemblies at cell-cell junctions.

Qualification & Experience required:

– Bachelor or Masters in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering or Bioinformatics or Physics with Minimum % of marks: 75.

– At least 1 year of project experience that involves programming; ideally in computational biology.

Skills required:

– Programming experience in Python/C++ or any other language.

– Comfortable working in Linux environment.

I.    Plan, execute, analyze, interpret and present/ submit data of routine Cell Biology laboratory activities to support the formulation/API/Ciptec/RA activities     

•    Perform screening of drugs/combination in different assays (Cytotoxicity, Cell proliferation, Permeability etc)
•    Maintain the tissue culture facility
•    Submit data to different groups like formulation/ RA/Ciptec
•    Present updates on data generated from the routine activities on monthly basis to senior managers

II.    Develop new technologies/assays to increase the capabilities of the Cell Bio lab

•    Discuss and finalize protocol of different new assays
•    Standardize and validate  the assay by checking for the consistency
•    Provide knowledge of the new technology to the higher management and different groups

III.    Support Logistics, Inventory maintenance (SAP, CER’s, Co-ordination/negotiating with vendors etc.) for procuring lab chemicals/lab consumables, installation/calibration/validation of instruments/equipment to ensure execution of the project  

•    Plan activities in a cost-effective manner thereby saving the budget
•    Maintain inventory through procurement, storage of reagents, media, kits, consumables etc
•    Maintain and culture (preserve) cell banks for different cell lines
•    Generate IQ (installation quali) /O (operational) Q/ P (performance)Q for newly installed instruments/equipment
•    Perform Periodic calibration/validation/qualification of instruments/ equipment/software
•    Manage sample receipt, registration, storage and destruction of samples as per respective SOP’s

IV.    Carrying out In-house Knowledge transfer creating back-ups, Technology transfer to outside parties for outsourced projects

•    Train other lab members in standardized assays
•    Attend Safety/ engineering/HR trainings
•    Provide scientific and technical input to outside parties
•    Co-ordinate with outside parties for outsourced activities (technology transfer, conducting relevant studies, data generation etc.)

V.    Prepare laboratory documents in accordance with GDP’s to meet quality standards

•    Prepare SOP’s/MOA’s/ Study protocols as and when required
•    Prepare EOP’s/IOP’s for all the instruments/equipment
•    Generate change control/incidence/deviation as per laboratory compliance
•    Update lab note-books in a timely manner
•    Implementation of GLP and lab safety protocols for smooth functioning of the department

A deep neural network is trained to estimate the mask for a target talker in the presence of competing sounds based on auditory processing model.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) is an Indian government department, under the Ministry of Science and Technology responsible for administrating development and commercialization in the field of modern biology and biotechnology in India. It was set up in 1986.

Through several research and development projects, demonstrations, grants, and creation of infrastructural facilities a clear visible impact of this field have been seen. The department has made significant achievements in the growth and application of biotechnology in the broad areas of agriculture, health care, animal sciences, environment, and industry. The proven technologies at the laboratory level have been scaled up and demonstrated in the field.

Fellowship

The amount of the fellowship is Rs. 25,000/- per month in addition to regular salary from the host institute. If an awardee is receiving a salary from an international organization, he/ she will be entitled to a research grant i.e. contingency only.

In addition, each Fellow will receive a contingency grant of Rs. 6.00 lakh per annum for meeting the expenses on consumables, equipment, international and domestic travel, manpower, and other contingent expenditure to be incurred in connection with the implementation of ongoing research projects under the fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The fellowship is open to Indian Nationals residing in India who are below the age of 55 years as 15-11-2020.
  • The fellowship is co-terminus with the superannuation of fellow in his/ her organization.
  • The applicant should possess a Ph.D. degree in Life Sciences, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, or a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences, Engineering, or an equivalent degree in Biotechnology/ related areas.
  • The applicant must have outstanding contributions and publications in a specific area.
  • The candidate must have a regular permanent position in a University/ Institute/ Organization and should be engaged in research and development. If he/ she is availing of any other fellowship, he/ she will have to opt for only one of the fellowships.

The project involves the use of a combination of enzyme engineering, biochemical and biophysical characterization, structural and computational biology, high-throughput screening, and genomic and proteomic discovery to identify enzyme targets.

Essential Qualification  : Doctorate (PhD) [in Life Sciences preferably with subjects Molecular  Biology, Biochemistry and Cell Biology] as evidenced from published papers in standard refereed journals.

Desirable Qualification   : Genetic manipulation of mammalian cells in culture, fluorescence microscopy, recombinant DNA techniques and methods of studying protein properties and functions.

Upper Age Limit :   35 years as on the day on which the application is made.

Emoluments  : Rs.47,000/- p.m. consolidated + 24% HRA as applicable/ admissible.
