1. Find a good speaking rhythm
The problem: If you try to speak too fast, your words don’t come out right. But if you try to slow down, you have trouble focusing.

The solution: You need to work on your speaking rhythm, or the speed and “sound” of your speaking.

Finding your perfect speaking rhythm will really help to improve your fluency. A good speaking pace is comfortable for you and the listener, keeps you focused, and gives you enough time to think through what you want to say.

Try it yourself: To find the perfect rhythm, you might have to experiment a little. Find a short paragraph, or even just a sentence to say.
Say the sentence slowly, then again faster, and again. Once you reach a speech that doesn’t feel comfortable (is too fast), slow back down. Repeat this with a few sentences, and soon you’ll find that perfect speed.

Once you find the right speed, you can work on the rhythm, which is the stress and intonation (how high or low a sound is) of your voice when you speak. To do this, choose a video that has subtitles.

2. Make sure you’re understood
The problem: Because of the language barrier, you’re never sure if people really understood what you meant.

The solution: Just ask them. Most of the time, you can make sure someone understood what you said by asking them to repeat what you said.

If you’re worried about sounding rude, you can remind them that you are still learning English, and you want to make sure you expressed yourself correctly.

Try it yourself: Practice with a speaking partner, or just try this in any English conversation: The next time you give any instructions, directions or information, follow it up with one of these phrases:

  • I want to make sure you got that. Would you mind repeating it?
  • I’m not sure if I said that right. Can you please repeat it?
  • Can you please run that by me, so I know you got it?
  • I’d like to be sure I’m expressing myself clearly. Could you please tell me what I’ve just said, so I know we’re on the same page?
  • By having the listener repeat what you said, you can make sure you were understood, or clarify anything they didn’t get (understand).

3. Keep talking
The problem: You may have trouble speaking fluently if you’re unsure of your grammar or vocabulary. However, stopping a lot when you talk can make it difficult for people to focus on what you’re saying.

The solution: Know your filler phrases!

Filler phrases are phrases (and words) that act like placeholders in a sentence. They fill in silences so that your speech is not interrupted. They don’t really add anything to the conversation, though, so they give you a little time to think of what to say.

4. Watch your body language
The problem: You are saying one thing, but your body is saying something different.

The solution: You might not know this, but your body speaks almost as loudly as you. The way you sit, the way you hold your hands, even which direction you look at—all these things can change the meaning of the words you speak.

For example, if you tell someone you would love to have lunch with them, but your arms are crossed and you’re not smiling, they might think that you don’t actually want to do it. If you’re nervous about speaking English incorrectly, you might show negative body language. And you might be misunderstood because of that. So the most important thing is to relax!

For native speakers, most body language is intuitive. That means you do it without thinking about or having to learn it. Not all of it, however, is universal. That is, not all body language and gestures mean the same thing in different cultures. (So you might have to do some learning here!)

5. Use appropriate language
The problem: You know “regular” English, so you’re not sure how to communicate to someone who speaks professional English or uses slang.

The solution: Sometimes it’s appropriate to switch to a more casual or a more formal manner of speaking. Depending on your English learning goal, you might already be learning professional or conversational English. Listen to how your conversation partner is speaking, take notice of your situation and environment, and try to match the type of English.

If you’re only learning regular English, don’t worry: Most of the time standard English works perfectly well as a communication tool, no matter who you’re speaking to.

Difference between Ph.D. and MD

First COVID-19 vaccine human trial finds it is safe, induces immune response

The first COVID-19 vaccine to reach phase I clinical trial is safe, well-tolerated, and capable of generating an immune response against the novel coronavirus in humans, says a new research published in The Lancet journal.

According to the study of 108 adults, the vaccine produced neutralising antibodies, and a response mediated by the immune system''s T-cells against the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2.

However, the scientists, including those from the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology in China said further research is needed to confirm whether the vaccine protects against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

In the trial, carried out in 108 healthy adults, the vaccine demonstrated promising results after 28 days, with the final results to be evaluated in six months, the study said.

"These results represent an important milestone. The trial demonstrates that a single dose of the new adenovirus type 5 vectored COVID-19 (Ad5-nCoV) vaccine produces virus-specific antibodies and T cells in 14 days," said study co-author Wei Chen from the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology.

Based on the results, Chen said the vaccine is a potential candidate for further investigation.

However, the researchers cautioned that the results should be interpreted carefully.

"The challenges in the development of a COVID-19 vaccine are unprecedented, and the ability to trigger these immune responses does not necessarily indicate that the vaccine will protect humans from COVID-19," Chen explained.

The Ad5 vectored COVID-19 vaccine used in the trial is the first to be tested in humans, the scientists said.

It uses a weakened common cold-causing adenovirus -- which infects human cells readily, but is incapable of causing disease -- to deliver genetic material that codes for the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to the cells, the study noted.

The scientists said these cells then produce the spike protein, and travel to the lymph nodes where the immune system creates antibodies.

These then recognise the spike protein and fight off the coronavirus, the researchers explained.

In the trial, they assessed the safety and ability of the new Ad5-nCoV vaccine to generate an immune response of different dosages in 108 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 60 years.

The volunteers were assigned to receive either a single injection of the new Ad5 vaccine at a low dose, middle dose, or a high dose, they said.

According to the study, the volunteers’ blood was checked at regular intervals following vaccination to see whether the vaccine stimulated two parts of the immune system.

These are the body’s ‘humoral response’, which is the part of the immune system that produces antibodies to fight infection, and the ''cell-mediated'' arm, which depends on a group of T cells to fight the virus, the scientists said.

They added that an ideal vaccine candidate generates both antibody and T cell responses to defend against SARS-CoV-2.

Based on the results, the researchers said the vaccine was well tolerated by the volunteers at all doses with no serious adverse events reported within 28 days of vaccination.

They said most adverse events were mild or moderate, with 83 per cent of those receiving low and middle doses of the vaccine and 75 per cent in the high dose group reporting at least one adverse reaction within 7 days of vaccination.

These reactions were mild pain at the injection site reported in over half of vaccine recipients, fever in 50 per cent of them, fatigue, headache, and muscle pain as well.

Within two weeks of vaccination, the study noted that all dose levels of the vaccine triggered some level of immune response.

Some of the participants, the researchers said, also exhibited a form of neutralising antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.

After 28 days, they said most participants had a four-fold increase in binding antibodies.

The scientists also added that 50 per cent of the participants in the low- and middle-dose groups, and three-quarters of those in the high-dose group showed neutralising antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.

In the majority of volunteers, they said the vaccine also stimulated a rapid T cell response.

On further analyses, the researchers said the majority of recipients showed either a positive T cell response, or had detectable neutralising antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 as much as 28 days after vaccination.

However, they said high pre-existing immunity to adenovirus type 5 -- the common cold virus vector used in the study, may have reduced both the antibody and T-cell response in the participants.

"Our study found that pre-existing Ad5 immunity could slow down the rapid immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 and also lower the peaking level of the responses," said Feng-Cai Zhu from the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China, who led the study.

Citing the main limitations of the trial, the authors said the study had a small sample size and was conducted in relatively short duration, with a lack of randomised control group.

They said further research will be needed before this trial vaccine becomes available to all.

UGC Rules, Regulations & Guidelines 2020 for Assistant Professor & JRF

According to the UGC Regulations, the minimum eligibility criteria for the assistant professor or equivalent posts in the UGC Approved Universities or colleges are as follows:

  • The candidates, who wish to get appointed as an assistant professor, JRF or equivalent posts should possess the SET/SLET, NET certificates and have a Masters degree.
  • A minimum of 55% marks is required at the post-graduation level for recruitment of teachers in the universities or colleges.
  • The candidates shall have a master’s degree or its equivalent with aggregate 55% marks from recognized university or institutes for admission to the Ph.D. programs.
  • A person whose M.Phil thesis has been evaluated and the viva voce is pending may be admitted to the Ph.D. program of the same Institution.

Note: Candidates who obtained a Ph.D. degree before 2009, will be exempted from the requirement of NET/ SLET/ SET for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professor or equivalent positions in Universities/ Colleges/ Institutions.

UGC Guidelines for Selection of Assistant Professor and Other Teaching Staff

As per the guidelines for appointment of an Assistant Professor, selection committee in the universities shall have the composition of following members:

1. The Vice-Chancellor shall be the Chairperson of the Selection Committee.

2. If required, an academician can be nominated by the Visitor/Chancellor.

3. Three experts in the concerned subject nominated by the Vice-Chancellor whose names are approved by the relevant statutory body of the university.

4. Dean of the concerned faculty (Not compulsory).

5. Head/ Chairperson of the Department/ School.

How the Selection Process of Assistant Professor takes place?

1. For being selected as an assistant professor, the candidates are required to submit bio-data in prescribed format of the respective university along with a copy of their significant publications.

2. As per the UGC new guidelines for PhD, the institutes release the prescribed notification of admission process for the Ph.D. The admission process consists various steps like admission test, interview, document verification etc.

3. According to new UGC Regulations, No University, Institution and College can conduct Ph.D. Programs through distance education mode. However Part-time Ph.D. will be allowed if UGC Ph.D. Regulations 2020 are followed by Institutes.

Note: As per the draft policy of new UGC Regulations, a PhD degree will be must to become an assistant professor at university level from 2021.

However, NET would not be required for those who completed their Ph.D. from the universities ranking among the top 500 in the world, as per Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the Times Higher Education (THE) or the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

Pay Scale - UGC Regulation 2020 for Assistant Professor’s Salary and Promotion

UNIVERSITY FINAL SEMESTER ONLINE EXAMINATION CONFIRMED?

The University of Delhi issued a letter to all the Heads of the Departments of the colleges that come under its administration.

This two paged letter firstly gives a clue to the HOD of the colleges that the University shall take the final year’s students’ examination. For the same, it has issued guidelines to the colleges for how to prepare the examination question papers.

The details of the letter issued by the Dean (examination) of the University of Delhi regarding the 3rd year students’ examination are given in detail below.

(1) REMOTE EXAMINATIONS

The Dean (examination), University of Delhi briefly describes that the examinations for the final year students shall be conducted remotely. The examinations shall be conducted for final year students under PG and UG courses at the University Of Delhi.

(2) EXAMINATIONS FOR BACKLOGS

However, University of Delhi has not confirmed anything about the first and second-year examinations but the university has made it clear that it would conduct the examinations for 1st / 2nd years simultaneously for repeaters who are in 3rd year/ final year. It means that the university shall take the examinations of all the final year students having backlog in their previous semesters.

(3) THE EXAMS SHALL BE CONDUCTED FROM RESIDENCE OF STUDENTS

The open letter consists of a detailed explanation for the final year students of the University of Delhi. The letter stated that the examination question paper shall be uploaded on the official portal of DU and the students have to download the question paper of their respective courses. After the download is completed the students have to solve it on the plain white sheets.

(4) STUDENTS CAN USE BOOKS AND STUDY MATERIAL DURING EXAMINATION

As the entire world is suffering from the lockdown, the University of Delhi has given students a relief of using the books and reference material to answers the question that is asked in the question paper. This type of examination is called OPEN BOOK EXAMINATION. The students shall use the books during this examination.

(5) TWO HOURS EXAMINATION

The duration of the examinations will be of two hours. However the University will give an extra hour for downloading the question paper. Meanwhile the scanning of the answer sheets, and uploading these answer sheets to the University’s portal will include in this extra hour provided by the university.

(6)  DEADLINE FOR UPLOADING ANSWER SHEETS TO THE UNIVERSITY’S PORTAL

The students will have to upload the answer sheets to the University of Delhi’s official portal within three hours from the start of the virtual examination. It means that the students will get two hours for solving the question paper and the rest one hour is for downloading the question paper, scanning the answer sheets, and finally uploading it to the University’s website.

(7) STUDENTS CANNOT COPY INSTEAD OF HAVING BOOKS

The University of Delhi has allowed the students to use books during the examination. But this would not be helpful to the students in the real sense if we look into the explanation stated by Dean (examination), for it.

The letter stated that the examination question paper will be framed in a manner that will check the understanding of the concept and the analytical skills of the student appearing for the examination.
Thus there shall be no scope for cheating or verbatim copying from the books or the reference study material during the examination.

(8) THE QUESTION PAPER WILL CONSIST OF THREE SETS

As the letter issued by the Dean(Examination), the University of Delhi discussed even the minute details of the examination. it also discussed that the question paper will consist of 3 sets for each course of both UG and PG programs that will be set by the department itself.

(9) LOGIN CREDENTIALS WILL BE SHARED SHORTLY

The question paper will be uploaded on the official website of the University of Delhi on the special examination portal created by the University. The details of the Login Credentials will be shared shortly by the students before the Examinations.

(10) THE QUESTION PAPER WILL CONSIST OF 6 QUESTIONS 
The question paper that will be formulated for the final year students’ examinations will consist of  6 questions out of which the students have to attempt only 4 questions of their choice in the time of 2 hours.

(11) THERE WILL BE NO PARTS IN THE QUESTIONS

The question paper will include 6 questions and the questions will not be further divided into parts like (a), (b) or (c). The maximum marks for the question paper will be 75 and 100 in the case of SOL/NCWEB papers

(12) HOD GOT THE TIME TILL 3RD JUNE TO SUBMIT QUESTION PAPERS

The HOD of the colleges has to send the question papers to the Dean (examination), the University of Delhi by 3rd June 2020.


Above mentioned are the details regarding the doubts of the examinations.  However, these are not yet announced on the University’s Official Website. We tried to confirm from many faculties of Delhi University College, they said it is not fake but yet to be finalized or it can be seen as the initial stage proposal.
At the end of the letter, the Dean requested the cooperation of all the teachers in these challenging times just for the sake of the welfare of students.

Discover Exam Pattern and Composition of Next UGC-NET Exam 2020

New Delhi:  The UGC-National Eligibility Test (NET) is one of the toughest competitive exams in India. In December 2019 UGC NET test, more than 10 lakh candidates registered to appear the test.

The national lockdown due to COVID 19 has prompted the National Testing Agency (NTA) to extend the application portal for UGC NET Exam to 16 May 2020.

Considering Corona Pandemic , the Union HRD Minister announced that the Exam of UGC NET June 200 will rescheduled. It is expected the Exam may be held in July-August 2020.  Earlier, the NTA had notified to conduct UGC-NET Exam during 15 June 2020 to 20 June 2020.

Now the candidates have nearly three months time to prepare the Entrance Test. Here, SkillOutlook presents the key points of exam pattern and composition of UGC-NET June 2020. Hence, the candidates can better understand the pattern and fine-tune their exam preparation.

Mode of Examination
 The Examination shall be conducted as Computer Based Test (CBT) only.

Pattern
 The Test will consist of two papers. Both the papers will consist of objective type, multiple choice questions. There will be no break between papers.

The total duration of the test is 03 hours (180 minutes) without any break. All the questions are compulsory.

Paper I
 The questions in Paper I intends to assess the teaching/ research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, reading comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate.

The total questions will be 50. Each question will carry two marks. Hence, the total marks assigned to Paper I is 100.

Paper II
 This is based on the subject selected by the candidate and will assess domain knowledge. The total questions will be 100. Each question will carry two marks. Hence, the total marks assigned to Paper I is 200.

There is no negative marking for incorrect response. No marks will be given for questions Unanswered/Marked for Review.

If a question is found to be incorrect/ambiguous during the key challenge, only those candidates who have attempted the question and chosen one of the correct answer would be given the credit. Only for dropped question(s), if any, marks will be given to all the candidates.

The candidates may note that the syllabus has been modified and the new syllabus applicable from June 2019 onwards has also been notified through a public notice on NTA website.

The number of candidates to be qualified (total slots or Eligibility for Assistant Professor) shall be equal to 6% of the candidates appeared in both the papers of NET.

In order to be considered for ‘JRF and Eligibility for Assistant Professor’ and for ‘Assistant Professor’, the candidate must have appeared in both the papers and secured at least 40% aggregate marks in both the papers taken together for General (Unreserved) category candidates and at least 35% aggregate marks in both the papers taken together for all candidates belonging to the following reserved categories (viz., SC, ST, OBC (belonging to Non-Creamy Layer, PwD and Transgender).

The NTA will upload Mock Test for UGC-NET June 2020 soon on the official website of NTA’s UGC-NET.

Last time the NTA conducted the UGC-NET Examination from 02 to 06 December 2019 for 10,34,872 candidates, covering 81 subjects. A total number of 7,93,813 candidates appeared the UGC NET Dec 2019.
